Weakening HIV

چکیده

One person’s fight against an HIV infection can decrease the virus’s ability to threaten its next victim, say Goepfert et al. (page 1009). Mutations that help the virus survive in one host decrease its ability to replicate in the next. HIV mutations that help the virus bypass the host’s immune system often fall within gag. This gene is a favorite target for mutations because, for some reason, Gag epitopes that are presented by HLA B alleles create the most productive immune response. But Gag is also critical for viral replication. The infected individual doesn’t benefit from replicationdampening gag mutations, as the virus still escapes from cytotoxic T cells. Goepfert and colleagues now find, however, that the resulting decreased replication may benefit the patient’s sexual partner. Their study of 114 couples found that individuals who were infected by partners with certain HLA B alleles had much lower viral levels when more than five gag mutations were present. Viral levels were lowest in newly infected individuals who did not have the same type of HLA B alleles as their partners, perhaps because the recipients’ T cells efficiently targeted non-Gag epitopes of the mutated virus. At least five gag mutations were needed to reduce viral load significantly. This threshold might explain why a T cell vaccine that induces immune responses against two Gag epitopes failed in a recent trial. Better results might be gained by targeting more epitopes.

The Impact of HIV on Child Health and the Health System

This chapter focuses on the impact the HIV epidemic has had on the health sector and the health status of children in 40 countries with medium to high HIV prevalence. With the rise in prevalence at antenatal clinics reaching 50 per cent (as in some areas of Botswana), and with adult prevalence of over 20 per cent in several parts of Africa, the health sector has been particularly hard hit. It n...

LAND TENURE, PROPERTY RIGHTS, AND HIV/AIDS APPROACHES FOR REDUCING INFECTION AND ENHANCING ECONOMIC SECURITY PRODUCT OF USAID PROPERTY RIGHTS AND RESOURCE GOVERNANCE PROGRAM Summary

Insecure land tenure and property rights for women are both contributing to the spread of HIV and weakening their ability to cope with the consequences of AIDS. These links are particularly acute in subSaharan Africa, and are leading to decreased agricultural production, food insecurity, rural outmigration, and additional infection. Strengthening women’s property and inheritance rights (WPIRs) ...

A Novel High-Performance Field-Weakening Control for Axial Flux-Switching Permanent-Magnet Motor

By combining the field-weakening control principle of a new axial flux-switching permanent-magnet motor (AFFSSPM) with the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) and maximum torque per voltage (MTPV) control principle, a novel field-weakening control strategy for AFFSSPM is proposed in this paper. In the first stage of the field-weakening, the difference between the reference voltage updat...

Short Communication: HIV-1 Variants That Use Mouse CCR5 Reveal Critical Interactions of gp120's V3 Crown with CCR5 Extracellular Loop 1

The CCR5 coreceptor amino terminus and extracellular (ECL) loops 1 and 2 have been implicated in HIV-1 infections, with species differences in these regions inhibiting zoonoses. Interactions of gp120 with CD4 and CCR5 reduce constraints on metastable envelope subunit gp41, enabling gp41 conformational changes needed for infection. We previously selected HIV-1JRCSF variants that efficiently use ...

A new optimization of segmented Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor based on increasing flux weakening range and output torque

In this paper a new optimization function for increasing the flux weakening range and output torque value of segmented interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (SIPMSM) is presented. In proposed objective function normalized characteristic current and saliency ratio are considered as two optimization variables during optimization process. The focus of this paper is rotor structure design suc...

Inefficient Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte–Mediated Killing of HIV-1–Infected Cells In Vivo

Understanding the role of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) in controlling HIV-1 infection is vital for vaccine design. However, it is difficult to assess the importance of CTLs in natural infection. Different human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I alleles are associated with different rates of progression to AIDS, indicating that CTLs play a protective role. Yet virus clearance rates following ant...
